So why does it exist? I think it’s mostly a marketing play. Nor do I see it being used in any sustained capacity.

But I do not see Visual Studio Code replacing the developer’s dedicated IDE. I’m picturing a small team, or working on a very small component quickly. The actual use cases must be pretty limited. It was a bit of a let down, but it is still neat. It is not likely, even with the really cute debug icon, you will be doing any debugging. All they do is call your locally installed mono compiler, which does the work. Which is pretty confusing, as the language support is not great for Mono, but you can debug for it. You can only run Mono and Node.js projects. Why would you not put more effort into the code support here? Build my Code! Well it’s pretty cool they support Mono, but my testing intellisense and autocomplete are not supported. But for other languages, like PHP, all you get is syntax highlighting. It is responsive and supports Regex.įor the supported languages - JSON, CSS, HTML,, and Node.js - intellisense and autocomplete work. Love the fact that all settings for the IDE are project-based and JSON files. Visual Studio Code takes much less time to launch, and auto-complete is way faster. Which is nice, because if you are used to Visual Studio, you know it can be very heavy.
It is all about get in, code, commit and leave. And opening the first project from GitHub was easy as well.

I gave it a good three hours of testing: the install was easy, until I needed to update Mono. Visual Studio Code is an integrated development environment (IDE) that runs on Mac - as well as Linux and Windows (for some reason). All without conceding to Boot Camp but it looks like that time has not yet come.

You can download it here (Progg圜leanSZ.ttf) I particularly favor the Proggy Clean (Slashed Zero). fon format, the truetype (ttf) format, as well as XWindows. Proggy is a set of fixed-width screen fonts that are distributed in Microsoft's. Here’s how a Lucida Console 11 point looks To be honest, I do not have any specific reason for using this font.
Lucida Console is a variant of Lucida Sans Typewriter with smaller line spacing. I call it the ‘programmer’s font for designers’. I like this font because its neat, has good amount of space between each line and the way it represents a 0 (zero) with a slash. Although the font looks similar to Consolas, I like the taller rounder characters and the extra whitespace (compared to Consolas) in this font. I am a huge fan of the DejaVu font family.

Note: You may also want to look at Inconsolata which is a free monospaced font inspired by the Consolas font and designed by Raph Levien. If you do not have the Consolas font on your machine, you can download the entire pack over here. Although it is a commercial font, it is bundled with Visual Studio.
I have a big LCD screen and I just love the way this font looks on it. Consolas has proportions closer to normal text, which makes it more reader-friendly than many other monospaced fonts. ConsolasĬonsolas is a great font for Visual Studio development, designed by Luc(as) de Groot, for Microsoft’s ClearType font family. Please note that this list is just my personal preference.
